Shades of Blue Sew It - Show It Challenge

What better theme for January than "Shades of Blue". We are all coming down off the holiday season "high" and settling in for those long winter nights, if you live in this part of the world anyway.

It was kind of ironic, that when Carla announced the theme, I had just tripped over these...
If you don't have a toddler in your house, you may not recognize that they are Disney's "Frozen" theme shoes. Elsa is just about all we talk about here. You know she freezes everything in sight.
And there was my inspiration!
My "Shade of Blue" challenge project is...
"The Cold Never Bothered Me Anyway"

You likely know I am an applique junkie, so once again I searched online for
"Elsa" clipart.

I printed off the picture, and then using the Microsoft "Paint" program, I doubled the size. Using a light box, I traced all the parts onto "HeatNBond®Lite" fusible web.
I like to trace all of the embroidery lines onto the web with a "Sharpie" pen, so they are nice and dark. Before removing the paper from the back of each piece, I place them on my lightbox and pencil in those lines on the front side of my fabric.

I like free motion all the embroidery lines with my machine and it makes it so much easier to stitch.  It also aids me in more accurate placement of the applique pieces.

The snowflakes are done with the Accuquilt GO "Holiday Medley" die and the lettering was done with my "Crafters Edge" alphabet dies.

I would love to tell you that "the cold never bothered me anyway", but I would be a big ole LIAR!
I happened to have this quilt done weeks before the hop, and the day I took photos...

Yep, it was -13 outside.
We broke decades old records!
I could have waited to take the photos, but we had snow, and we had cold...
It just seemed like perfect timing.

I got a little crazy when I was cutting snowflakes, and I have 3 leftovers.
They are cut from white "Island Batik" fabric.
So, lets have a give-away.
Unfortunately with the postage rates, I do have to limit this to USA residents only. If you would like these snowflakes,  leave me a sweet comment telling me how you would use them and I will pick and announce the winner Friday the 27th!

Now hop on over and visit my fellow bloggers today. Hopefully they have something that will warm you up a bit!

  1. What a sweet quilt and lovely blues, and a darling little girl, all bundled up with her favorite fabrics. You are definitely doing something right there! =) I love knowing how you did what you did, so thanks for explaining that. Oh, snowflakes! I'm making my mitten quilt finally, and need setting blocks with snowmen and snowflakes, embroidered and appliquéd. I have a picture in my head that I hope to be able to match!

  3. Your Frozen is "Fabulous". We have a little 3 yr old, who has two favs. Ella and Mabel Marple( a beautiful book character from Sheree Fitch". Your quilt is lovely, and what sweet emotions your little one will have with her heroine by her side. Congratulations on a great project Joan.

  4. Your quilt is beautiful, but that picture is worth a million bucks! So sweet!! I would use the snowflakes to make a pillow. I try to decorate for the holidays/seasons, and need something for winter.

  5. Elsa turned out fantastic! And now I'm going to have that song running through my head all day. Lol

After seeing that -13, I am glad I live in the south. We are having a super cold morning today at 35 degrees and even that is too cold!

  6. That's an adorable quilt; as cute as Sweet Pea napping under it! I had to laugh, though; first time I read the name/lettering, I thought it said Covid! I mean, (in my defense) I'd just written about Covid. I like cold much better. Besides, cold fits the weather and the hop perfectly.

  18. love your little one! Hubby has been asking for a wall hanging/topper in winter colors( rather than Christmas) so it can stay up longer. These would be perfect! And probably the only snowflakes we'll have this year!

  24. What a beautiful project.
I was fascinated by Frozen animation for a while
It turned out beautifully and it's no surprise that your little sweet pea liked it so much.
As for the cold, I don't like it at all and I've never experienced such intense cold, lol

  25. Gorgeous quilt, Joan, and I love the pic of your granddaughter napping with it. My granddaughters have grown out of the Frozen phase (except the baby who is unaware of it yet) but they would have loved a quilt like that a year or 2 ago. Great work!

  30. Your quilt is just to cute!!, and the little one sleeping under it is just darling. My youngest granddaughter just turned 17, so no more Elsa quilts for me. I would use the snowflakes in a table runner. I have been making a lot of them lately so I can get better at quilting them. Thank you for the chance to win them.It was 34 degrees here today with 6 1/2 in. of snow, our power was out for 11 hours, but it was beautiful. cindy.keence@sbcglobal.net
