Pin cushions are one of those things that, for those who sew, are a required piece of equipment. Not that I didn't spent many many years trying to prove that I "didn't need no pins"! LOL!! But like many before me, I succumbed to common sense. Not soon enough for my best friends mom, who was a seamstress. I remember her breaking out in a cold sweat just watching me sew! She has passed now, so I will never know, but I can't help but wonder why she never said too much to me. You know what had to be going thru her head!
So thanks to "that" bit of common sense that took over, and the Kompletely Kookie Kristen for hosting this fun blog hop. If ya gotta have the tool, it should be just about as much fun as you can make it right??? LOL!! Hat's off, or should I say "straight pin salute" to Madame Samm for leading the charge with her fabulous blog hop ideas... We are gonna have the "best-est" pin cushions out there! :-)
In Alaska last month, I saw a really fun pin cushion, in one of the quilt shops I visited... hummm I had actually started a project at home, and it would make a great addition. Best yet, there was that blog hop I had signed up for!!!
After all, one can never have enough places to keep supplies!
Now there was just enough fabric for one more project. It could be a bread basket... or just a fun little wall hanging with a little "moosie" sign on it!
Oh yea, the moosie won out in this house! :-)

It's really nothing more than 2 bowls glued together!
While I was busy "wrapping", I thought another bowl might be appropriate.
Now there was just enough fabric for one more project. It could be a bread basket... or just a fun little wall hanging with a little "moosie" sign on it!
Oh yea, the moosie won out in this house! :-)
Regardless, it completed the on-som!

ReplyDeleteVery coolio use of the bowls! I think the Mother should have used a pincushion the other day when she just stuck them into the sofa in a hurry and then sat down!!!OUCH!!!

ReplyDeleteI love your wraps! The very first time I tried to machine quilt something - a small pillow top -- I decided that pins weren't necessary. Needless to say, by the time I finished the top and bottom layers had slip faaaar apart and the pillow ended up being a LOT smaller than I intended, lol.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great set you made! I love the pincushion over the baskets... I have to use pins. When I don't I end up using 'the other' must have gadget: the seam ripper!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm always using pins. I'll pin something and my mother will say 'I never pin that I just sew it and it doesn't take me long'. That makes me so mad. I use to think I wasn't very good because I always pinned.

ReplyDeleteI think it would have to be putting in a zipper, as the time(s) that I should have pinned and basted before sewing. Could be one of the reasons most do not like zippers. I do pin and poke myself now while doing them .... it is just a little quicker that way.

ReplyDeleteI don't usually use pins and I know I should. I made a very pretty quilt without pins one time and as I was quilting it, several of the seams came undone because they had shifted when I was sewing them. So I now try and use pins more often, especially for bigger seams.

ReplyDeleteOoops, I forgot to comment on pins! I really should pin when I am making the spicy swirled table runner. I'm not usually a pinner, but I have found there are times when it really helps!

ReplyDeleteWhat a neat way to use the fabric wrap bowls. You have quite a collection of wonderful pin cushions. The time I should have used pins and didn't was just after I learned about pressing seams opposite ways and nesting them. I was making a hexagon I Spy and my friend assured me with this method I would not to need to use pins to get perfectly matched seams. Wrong. After a couple of rows I was nesting my seams but also pinning. With more experience behind me I sometimes forget about the pins when nesting seams but not always. ReplyDeleteYour pincushion collection is amazing! I'm one who only pins when I have to - but I have learned that what you can get by with while piecing blocks doesn't work when assembling rows for a top. The longer the seam the more I pin.

ReplyDeleteLove those pin cushions...many times I should have but did not. I finally gave up and all the seams line up now, duh. Well, for the most part, I definately need them during foundation paper piecing.
ReplyDeleteWhen should I HAVE used pins oh my. With serging I try to pin fabrics so they won't get in the cutter. That said I have found that I have left pins INSIDE a project, doesn't sleep well :)
ReplyDeleteWhen should I have pinned???... is when I end up frog stitching you know rip-it, rip-it ,rip-it!!!!with that handy seam ripper. If I had pinned it I would not be frog stitching! That is when I should have used pins!!!

Lov ethem all. ok its all about pins...But i lvoe the bowls too....The last time I sewed was to make a minky baby blanket...I always pin them to death. bucause if I don't they start slideing and slithering like lil snakes trying to run away.....well I have been sick , surgery you name. So I am tired and no energy and thought I could just sew with a lot less pinning.....Way to little needless to say i ended up haveing to rip the whole darn thing out and redo it again..Learned my lesson and was thinking in the back of my mind the whole time I bet it is gonna be a mess without pinnig it all down. Because I learned my lesson this same lesson several years back on this same type project.

One time I was sewing borders on a quilt I thought I don't need to pin but when I got to the end of the side of the quilt I realized I should have as things did not line up and the seam ripper had to come out . ReplyDeleteGreat pincushion(s)!! Wrapping one up was a lovely creative use of 'wrapping'. Well...I am a pinner...so here's my pin story. I made this gorgeous boudoir pillow for a gift. I used lots of programming with sewing stitches, added special buttons and ribbons and added a piece of ruching all around the pillow. I HAD to pin, pin, pin! After gifting the pillow, my granddaughter FOUND a pin that was embedded in the pillow. It took some fancy handwork to extract that sewn-in pin and repair the necessary mend!

What wonderful pin cushions and baskets! And I love the photo quilt you shared in the previous post! What an heirloom! I should have used pins when I hemmed my kitchen curtains. One side is a full inch shorter than the other side.

ReplyDeleteI love your pinnies, especially the bowls. I am a pinner, I rarely do anything I don't pin. So one night not long ago I was sewing real late in the night or early in the morning (2 am) trying to finish a quilt top. I pinned my row together on my lap and sewed. When I stood up to press, I realized I had pinned and sewn my shirt in the seam. Obviously time for bed.

ReplyDeleteIn my case, I learned those lessons well from my mom and I always pin and truth be told, probably over-pin! It may be overkill on my part but I try to always do my best piecing and pins help. SO I don't think I can come up with a story. No, I am not a perfectionist.
