It's Cool to be Square Blog Hop

Welcome to my day of It's Cool to be Square!

I'm excited to share with you, that I got to spend a week with the fabulous
Bonnie Hunter!
Well ok, with the Covid quarantine, I didn't really spend a week "with"
her per say...but I did spend a week with her book.
That counts doesn't it?
LOL!!
A "Lone Star" quilt has been on my to-do list for a very long time.
I must admit, I was a little scared to tackle it,
but what better time, being stuck at home and all.
"Sew" I pieced and I pieced...
...and I trimmed and I trimmed...
...til I had piles and piles of star points!
200 to be exact...
...that were stitching into 8 blades of 25 star points each.
I'm not sure just why Lone Star quilts terrified me so much???
It may have been the fact that they were basically paper pieced,
but stitching them together was way easier than I thought it would be.
This is my "Covid Craziness" versions of Bonnie Hunters
"Santa Fe String" Quilt.
It's wild and crazy, much like...
well, you know who!
This guy is a biggie...
it measures 76"x 76"
If you've got scraps this is a great way to use them.
It takes a "LOT" but for some reason, my scraps drawers are still full!
Just how does this happen?
Plenty of room for sun bathing, now that the weather is nice.
Yikes, that's an image even I don't want to see.
Maybe I'll just sit and admire the newly planted toilet planters!
A big thanks to Carol at "Just Let Me Quilt" for your valiant attempt
in helping me with my scrap problem!
It just might just take another few blog hops though, it seams!
:-)
We have lots of wonderful bloggers participating in the hop this week.
Make sure you visit them all.
You can find the full schedule

til next time...
Keep on Stitchin'

  6. Holy Cow (maybe that's Moose)! I LOVE this quilt! I have to make one and try to get rid of some of these scraps. I just ordered the book this quilt is in so maybe more of Bonnie's projects will help me, but I know what you mean about that scrap pile growing... Thanks for sharing this wonderful quilt!

  7. The blue you chose for the background is wonderful. The dark background for the star and the geese really makes it pop. It is hard to empty those scrap drawers.

  8. Wonderful quilt! I admit that Lone Star quilts intimidate me, too. It might be because one of my sons picked this pattern out ... in solids ... when I was a newbie quilter and my attempt was less than stellar. It was not paper pieced and I had trouble getting the seams in the diamonds matched. This looks like a good scrap quilt. Did you leave the papers on when you sewed the diamonds together? I need to try this pattern again someday. I have been looking at a modern version of the lone star for the same son and his gal and trying to get up my courage. You always amaze me, Joan! ... Thank you for all the inspiration ... :) Pat

  10. I haven't seen a scrappy Lone Star before, but WOW! That is gorgeous! I do know that the scraps reproduce while we aren't looking though. They are worse than rabbits multiplying!

  14. Wowzers! That is gorgeous but it makes me want to bow down to you for your incredible piecing job. You are way cooler than me in using scraps (don't tell anyone, but mine get tossed.) Love this, love your craziness (toilet planters hahahaha), and love having you to inspire me. xo

  15. I am amazed at how great your star looks using scraps. Haha, I can relate to the scrap drawer being full even after you think you used a lot.

  19. OM goodness! I was so excited...I thought you must have gotten in on a retreat at the Quiltville Inn before the virus thing started. Well...I was a bit disappointed when you were really talking about the book of Bonnie's. Darn...maybe next time. 'Wild and crazy', that's for sure - you and the quilt. Honestly, I always think it's amazing that a person does/finishes a Bonnie quilt - so many pieces. All the small pieces are daunting but paper-piecing was, I'm sure, much, much better. Stay safe, Joan.

  29. WoW, now that's an eye catcher and imagine you could probably look at it for hours and still not see all the different fabrics you used. That is really AMAZING and a brave project to take on. I love it!!

  30. What a wonderful result. That is a lot of piecing. Love the scrappy star with all those colours.
And it is fun to see it outside in the sunshine!!

  31. Oh WOW, Joan! I love lone star quilts, but they do intimidate me, especially those Y-seams. I bought a pattern about a hundred years ago for a feathered lone star. I don't even know where that pattern is now! LOL Love your scrappy lone star. Thanks for sharing.

  33. Wow! Just WOW! This is totally excellent, and I love the name (of course). I'm not surprised about the scrap bins though; my scraps seem to reproduce and the bins stay full. Just sayin'. Thanks for sharing!

  34. You didn't mention in the blog which of her books you were being so cozy with! And cozy is definitely going to happen with that beautiful quilt!

  35. Wowza! You went all in on this one. Who wants all there scraps gone? What would we play with or get inspiration from.

  36. This reminds me of a quilt my grandmother made which was unfortunately lost (along with a lot of others) in a house fire. It was one of my favourites that I remember her working on.

  37. What a great quilt and using up scraps, well not completely using up but putting a small dent in the scrap bin is a win.
