My Favorite Quilt Block Blog Hop

When Carla asked me to join in on her "My Favorite Quilt Block" blog hop...
I jumped right in, cause my favorite quilt block was the "Bear Paw"
NO..."Churn Dash"
No...
oh, that list goes on and on!
LOL!!
Actually I wasn't quite sure just what block I was going to share, until my quilting 
buddy "Joi" gave me a new book for my birthday.
It all became very clear what my favorite block was then...
Not just because he's a moose...well, maybe because he's a moose!
I am sure your thinking, that's not a block.
But he is, he really is!
LOL!!
And he's right from the pages of this fun book!
And, when he joins all his buddies, he becomes part of the herd with a message to
"Make the "Moost" out of life!
And, that's a motto, I can get onboard with!
:-)

This is a new to me, technique. If I had to describe it,
 I'd say it's paper piecing. for those who hate to paper piece.
LOL!! 
There is paper involved, but only freezer paper that you use to trace and cut the pattern with.
You cut multiple layers at one time.
Once that's done, you just start stitching pieces together.
This is what you end up with.
Kinda crazy I know, but once it's squared up...
...you have this guy!

If you noticed above,  there are numbers on each piece. It's really important that you keep organized when stitching these blocks. Those numbers are as crucial as keeping your fabrics stacked correctly.
And when you try to move your mat and trip over your feet, you end up with this mess!
Lets just say, that after a few hours of frustration, I managed to
sort and re-stack everything, so I could continue on!
LOL!!
There's just something about these guys!
These bright and fun fabrics are my hand dyes...
...and, I chose the QAYG method to put it all together.




With so many holidays covered...
you'll likely see these guys around sometime again!

On a completely unrelated note...
Keep in mind, today is 9-11, a day we will always remember.
 Please say a little prayer for those we lost,
 as well the first responders we continue to loose.
I received this pin a week after it happened,
from an FBI agent, I helped at the airport.
It's always held a very special place in my heart,
as I was working while it was happening that terrible day.
It's feels strange to say...
this is the first time since the 9-11, that I am no longer an airline employee.

Child Play with "Island Batik"

This month it's all about "Child's Play" with 
and
"Accuquilt" has generously given me one of their new "BOB" dies.
What's a "BOB" you ask...
Block on Board!
Yep, everything you need to make a block all in one die.
I received the "Crossed Canoe" die and
 decided that a little "play on words" was in order, for this challenge.
LOL!
Here you have...
"You Canoe It"
Life is tough and the best thing we can do for our kids is to 
inspire them to be their best, and let them know that,
 they "CANOE" anything they put their minds to
don't you think?
:-)
While the actual canoe isn't a die, the beautiful background
 is made of "crossed canoe" blocks.
I've been hoarding/saving this beautiful stack, of fat eighths from the 
 Blue Moon collection that "Island Batik" gave me.
The time had come...this project just called for me to use it.
LOL!!
All those colors were perfect for these blocks.
It's amazing just what you can do with fat eighths.
That's all it took to make the crossed canoe blades.

As for the canoe...
I searched online for free clipart, and enlarged it.
It was just what I needed to complete my little play on words!
A big thanks to "Accuquilt" and "Island Batik".
I do hope you've enjoyed my "Child's Play".

"Accuquilt" makes these blocks so easy to stitch together, that
you "canoe" it too.

A Time For All Seasons-September




It's back to school time and "fall" is in the air.
There are fields of Sunflowers in bloom around here, 
so I really couldn't think of a more suitable block for this month.
 "September Sunflowers"
 The pieced block this month is the "Missouri Puzzle" block.

Please note what block you would like.
Careful preparation and piecing is the key on this pieced block.
I suggest that you use starch or spray sizing on your fabrics before you cut them.
It stabilizes the fabric and makes them much easier to stitch.

It's so much fun to see the blocks come together.

Are you laboring this weekend?

First off, Congratulations!
While the "Beat the Heat" blog hop is over...
Nancy D can keep on celebrating!
Yes Nancy, you are my winner of the "Sunny Side Up" charms.
A big thanks to all of you who visited.
I hope you enjoyed this hop as much as I did.
My head is full of ideas and I really do want all the fabrics we saw!
LOL!!!

As for what I am laboring on this weekend...
I spent my day yesterday cutting, and cutting and cutting...
And marking, marking, marking!

Have you see "Partners in Design" quilt along?
I had seen it, but had so many other projects on my plate.
Then those photos started showing up on my Facebook feed...
And well, I was hooked.
While I got a very late start to things, I just couldn't put it down
 once I got started on it.
These are the last 4 blocks. Pretty cool don't you think?
Here's the center. Do you see the big boo boo?
I had to re-cut one of the pinwheels, and rats...
I grabbed the wrong dot fabric.
Looks like I will be doin' some rippin' today.
The joys of seeing your errors when you post photos!
HAHAHAHA

It's not too late to get a hold of these patterns, but you better hurry.
You can find them

They have different setting options and some fun way to use these the blocks
if you don't want to make them in to a quilt.
I am using the "Snowy Days Quilting" finishing.
 I absolutely fell in love with it, when I saw it.
I do believe Bobbi and Bonnie Hunter could be sisters, with all the pieces
they have you cut. LOL!!
 I love working on Bonnie Hunter quilts, so this setting spoke
right to my heart!
Here's a peek at my design wall.
 (it's propped up in front of another quilt, 
if your wondering what the heck your seeing)
All the little pieces I cut yesterday, will be making sashings like the one
on the second block down from the right.
I'm going to shut up now and get to work on them!

Beat the Heat Blog Hop with Island Batik




Welcome to my day to share this new line of "Island Batik" fabric.

If these colors don't cool you down...
I don't know what will!
LOL!!
I searched my book collection and found a quilt pattern,
 that really showed off  these fun fabrics,
 in "Fresh and Fabulous Quilts" 
by Cheryl Brown

The colors and the secondary design are a match made in Heaven!

There's nothing more fun than quilting a project, that's colors pop like this!
Accept maybe, quilting it with a "Hobb's" product.
Their cotton batting was perfect for the job.

Have you ever tried scalloped borders?
 There are templates in the book, that made these super easy.
I wish that had been the case in some of my past projects.
LOL!!
Just for fun, I topped them off with sunny yo-yo's!
I had a little extra fabric...
Just enough to make these petals...

and turn them into this fun flower pillow.

...and that's how my "Beat the Heat" garden grows!

It's "Sunny Side Up" all around.
